Darren Byrne is a Technical/Scientific Adviser with the Environmental Advisory Unit of the Department of Communications, Climate Action & Environment. Prior to joining the Department in 2006, he worked on air quality assessments for road infrastructural projects and the production of Environmental Impact Statements as Senior Scientific Officer in Enterprise Ireland’s Environment Unit for 8 years. Mr. Byrne has a wide ranging and multi-disciplinary role in the Department, providing strategic technical/scientific advice to inform policy development and programme delivery. Some of the core areas of environmental policy and legislative developments to which he provides expert advice and knowledge address issues such as PRIs, hazardous wastes and chemicals. Mr. Byrne has sat on various national, EU & UN Committees engaged with policy and regulatory developments and implementation issues on WEEE, waste batteries and end-of-life vehicles, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and mercury, more specifically he is the national focal point for SAICM and Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions. He has also been a member of various EPA Research Steering Committees on topics such as mercury (EU Mercury Expert Group), WEEE and POPs.
